As Real Madrid prepare for their final La Liga fixture against Real Sociedad, attention is already shifting towards next season. The match at the Santiago Bernabéu will not only mark the end of a campaign but could also serve as a farewell to several veterans. Yet, in a surprising twist, Luka Modric may not be one of them—thanks to Xabi Alonso.

Modric set for renewal after expected exit

Just a few weeks ago, Luka Modric seemed all but certain to leave the club this summer. With his contract set to expire and at 39 years old, the Croatian legend was grouped among the likely departures alongside players such as Lucas Vázquez, who still appears set to depart.

The Real Madrid board had expressed doubts about Modric’s ability to contribute consistently next season, given his age and the growing competition in midfield. However, recent developments have completely changed the narrative.

Xabi Alonso wants Modric to stay

According to reports from Radio Marca, incoming head coach Xabi Alonso has personally requested the club to renew Modric’s contract. Alonso believes Modric still has much to offer—not just on the pitch, but as a leader and mentor within the dressing room.

The Croatian maestro has always dreamed of continuing his career at the top level, aiming to represent his country in the 2026 FIFA World Cup while still wearing the famous white jersey of Real Madrid. That ambition could now become reality.

Modric, who turns 40 in September, recently became the oldest player and goalscorer in Real Madrid history, surpassing the legendary Ferenc Puskás. His longevity, professionalism, and footballing intelligence remain invaluable assets for any team—especially one blending youth with experience.

Midfield puzzle for 2024–25

Should Modric remain at the club, Real Madrid’s midfield depth will become both a blessing and a challenge for Alonso. The club currently has seven central midfielders (not including Brahim Díaz):

  • Luka Modric
  • Jude Bellingham
  • Eduardo Camavinga
  • Aurélien Tchouaméni
  • Federico Valverde
  • Dani Ceballos
  • Arda Güler

Jude Bellingham is expected to shift into a deeper role under Alonso, while Ceballos and Camavinga face uncertain futures amid rumors of possible exits or loan deals. Tchouaméni and Valverde are seen as untouchables, while Güler is being groomed as a long-term creative force.

The club has also been scouting new midfield options, with four names already on their shortlist. But Modric’s presence, if renewed, would ensure there’s no shortage of experience as the club transitions under its new manager.

MadridistasZone Opinion:

Few players in football history have aged as gracefully as Luka Modric. His passion, technical brilliance, and ability to control games have never truly faded, even as his legs may have slowed slightly. Personally, I see his extension as a wise move—both tactically and emotionally. In a young and evolving Real Madrid squad, there’s still room for one more season of Luka magic.
