Real Madrid’s 2024–25 season has not lived up to expectations, and while much of the focus has been on collective inconsistency, individual performances have also come under scrutiny. One of the most surprising dips has come from Jude Bellingham, the English star who dazzled in his debut campaign but has since struggled to replicate that level.

From sensational debut to a subdued second season

Jude Bellingham exploded onto the scene at the Santiago Bernabéu last season, scoring goals, dictating play, and delivering match-winning performances on a weekly basis. His incredible form even placed him among the top candidates for the Ballon d’Or, and he quickly became a fan favorite.

However, the current campaign has painted a very different picture. Bellingham has found it difficult to maintain consistency, and his overall influence on matches has waned. The change in his position appears to be a significant factor in this regression.

Positional shift under Ancelotti limits Bellingham’s impact

Under Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid transitioned back to a 4-4-2 formation, which has seen Bellingham deployed in a deeper or left-sided midfield role, rather than as the central attacking force he was previously. This tactical tweak has limited his freedom, resulting in fewer touches in dangerous areas and a noticeable drop in his goal contributions.

According to Marca, the Real Madrid board has taken note of Bellingham’s dip in form, and while they still believe in his long-term potential, they expect much more from him next season.

Pressure builds ahead of Xabi Alonso’s arrival

With Xabi Alonso set to take over as manager next season, Bellingham is once again expected to experience a change in role. Alonso is likely to implement a 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-3 system, and the hope is that this will allow Bellingham to play higher up the pitch—closer to goal, where he can be most effective.

However, the competition is increasing. Arda Güler, Real Madrid’s young Turkish playmaker, has impressed in limited appearances and is pushing hard for a regular starting role. If Bellingham fails to rediscover his best form, he could find himself further down the pecking order—an unthinkable prospect just a year ago.

Playing through pain: The hidden challenge

It’s worth noting that Bellingham has been playing with a shoulder injury since November 2023. While the midfielder has shown tremendous character by continuing to play through pain, the injury has clearly affected his physicality and confidence on the pitch.

Reports indicate that surgery is planned for this summer, although the exact timing remains uncertain. With the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 fast approaching, Real Madrid will need to decide whether to prioritize his recovery or his availability for the tournament.

Club remains confident—but expectations are high

Despite his recent struggles, Real Madrid still view Bellingham as a cornerstone of their future. The club understands the physical and tactical challenges he’s faced this season, but they also know that top players must rise above adversity. With the arrival of a new manager, renewed competition, and the spotlight of the Club World Cup, Bellingham will be expected to step up.

MadridistasZone Comment:

Every player experiences a dip in form—but for a talent like Jude Bellingham, the standards are higher. Personally, I believe that with proper recovery and a clearer tactical role under Xabi Alonso, Bellingham will bounce back even stronger. The fire, the hunger, and the talent are still there. All he needs now is time, support, and the right conditions to shine again at the Bernabéu.
