As Real Madrid continue their summer rebuild, the club’s focus has been on strengthening the defense. With Trent Alexander-Arnold arriving from Liverpool and Dean Huijsen signing from Bournemouth, Los Blancos have wasted no time reinforcing the backline. However, while arrivals are taking the spotlight, departures are equally important—and one major name could be on the way out: David Alaba.

Three arrivals for the defense – and more to come?

In addition to Alexander-Arnold and Huijsen, Real Madrid are reportedly in advanced talks with Benfica for left-back Álvaro Carreras, who is said to be the top target for that position. If completed, this would bring the total to three defensive signings ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The only confirmed exit so far is veteran Lucas Vázquez, whose contract ends this summer. But more changes are coming—and David Alaba’s future is now under serious doubt.

Alaba’s uncertain future under Xabi Alonso

At 32 years old, David Alaba has not looked the same since suffering a serious knee injury that kept him out for 13 months. Although he made his return in January, the Austrian defender has struggled to regain top form, and his role under incoming manager Xabi Alonso is far from guaranteed.

According to Cadena SER, Real Madrid offered to terminate Alaba’s contract in January, covering his full salary for the rest of the season. The idea was to free up funds to sign a new right-back mid-season. However, Alaba rejected the offer, opting to stay and fight for his place at the club.

Where does Alaba fit in the new system?

Alonso is known for using a three-at-the-back system during his successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen. In theory, this could suit Alaba’s profile well—especially with his ability to carry the ball forward and operate as a left-sided center-back.

However, recent performances have raised questions. Alaba struggled when played as a left-back in the Champions League against Arsenal and has slipped down the pecking order in central defense. Players like Antonio Rüdiger, Éder Militão, Dean Huijsen, and even Aurelien Tchouameni are currently ahead of him, while Raúl Asencio is also making a case for minutes.

MadridistasZone Opinion:

David Alaba’s time at Real Madrid may be entering its final chapter. Injuries and new arrivals have complicated his role, and while he remains a respected figure in the dressing room, football is ultimately about performance and availability. Personally, I still believe Alaba can play an important part if he returns to full fitness—but in this new-look Real Madrid squad, no one’s place is guaranteed anymore
