Real Madrid have officially announced the departure of their legendary midfielder and captain, Luka Modric. For many, including myself, it’s a tough pill to swallow.

There’s no doubt this news has split the fanbase in two. On one hand, some supporters believe the timing is right – Modric deserves a respectful goodbye after a glorious career. On the other, many are heartbroken, not only by his exit, but also by the feeling that he still had more to give in a white shirt.

As someone who aligns with the latter, I can’t help but think that Real Madrid could’ve benefited from Modric’s presence for at least one more season. Yes, he’s not the same player he was at his peak. The legs may be slower, but the brain? Still unmatched.

A Farewell That Feels Too Soon

Despite his reduced role this season, Modric continued to show his class when called upon. He may no longer be a regular starter, but what he brought off the bench – composure, control, press resistance – is something few midfielders can offer. His last performance against Sevilla, where he dominated the midfield and dictated the game like it was 2018 again, was a testament to his enduring quality.

Even in a transitional period, with Kroos gone and younger players stepping up, Modric had a role to play. Perhaps not every game, perhaps not 90 minutes – but a role nonetheless.

Was This the Right Time?

Of course, there are others who saw this coming. Modric has had some off games, and his presence might have limited the growth of the likes of Arda Güler, Bellingham, or even Tchouaméni and Camavinga in central roles.

This is where the divide becomes evident – two valid perspectives clashing over one iconic figure. Some see this as the perfect, respectful farewell at the right time. Others, like myself, feel the goodbye came a little too soon.

One thing is clear though: Luka Modric will go down as the greatest midfielder in Real Madrid history. The trophies, the moments, the magic – all will be remembered forever.

Personal Comment from a True Madridista:

As a lifelong Madridista, this one hurts. Luka wasn’t just a player – he was poetry in motion. He aged like fine wine and left us with unforgettable memories. Thank you, Maestro. You’ll always have a place in the heart of every true Madrid fan. 🖤 #GraciasLuka #ModricLeyenda
