Real Madrid’s focus is firmly on the future — but that doesn’t mean every talented youngster will be brought to the Santiago Bernabéu. Despite strong interest earlier this year, Franco Mastantuono, the Argentine wonderkid from River Plate, is no longer a transfer priority for Los Blancos.
Interestingly, the reason has nothing to do with money.
Xabi Alonso Begins Planning a New Era
As newly appointed head coach Xabi Alonso begins his preparations for the FIFA Club World Cup and the 2025–26 season, key squad decisions are already being made. Speaking at his first press conference, Alonso emphasized his desire to work closely with the club in shaping the team’s future:
“It’s our duty to always try to improve — whether in game tactics or squad planning. I don’t come with demands, but with the will to work and improve what’s already a fantastic team.”
One of the major early decisions? Rejecting the opportunity to sign Franco Mastantuono, despite the growing hype around the 16-year-old.

Not a Matter of Talent — But of Timing
According to David Alonso of Diario AS, Real Madrid’s decision is not based on any doubt about Mastantuono’s talent:
“No one questions his immense talent and incredible potential, but his signing would clash with the club’s current project focused on developing Arda Güler and Nico Paz.”
Both Güler and Paz are highly regarded by the club, and bringing in another attacking midfielder with a similar profile could slow down their growth. Real Madrid appears committed to giving them more responsibility rather than creating internal competition too early.
Meanwhile, clubs like Chelsea and PSG are still chasing Mastantuono and are reportedly willing to meet River Plate’s high demands.
Trust in Youth Already Within the Club
Rather than spending big or creating an overcrowded midfield, Real Madrid’s strategy is clear: build from within. With Güler already showing flashes of brilliance and Nico Paz potentially earning a regular squad spot under Alonso, there is a deliberate focus on organic development.
While Mastantuono may still have a future in Europe, that future may not lie in Madrid — at least not right now.
MadridistasZone opinion:
Real Madrid’s decision shows that their strategy isn’t just about grabbing every hot prospect — it’s about building a balanced team and trusting in the talents already in the squad. Personally, I admire this approach. Giving Güler and Paz the opportunity to shine could pay off more than another high-profile signing.
